A dormant Indian bank account transfers away after ten years. Shares transfer after
seven — and it is the shareholding that moves, not just the dividend nobody banked. The
shorter clock is on the asset least likely to be watched, which is usually a holding a parent bought
decades ago and stopped thinking about. Both can be claimed back. Both are easier to find than to
claim. Nothing you enter reaches any server.

Two different systems, two different clocks — and the shorter one is on the asset people watch least verified
Money left with an Indian bank and money left with a company are governed by separate regimes that behave differently. Deposits — savings balances, fixed deposits, unpaid balances — that stay inactive for ten consecutive years are transferred to the Reserve Bank's Depositor Education and Awareness Fund. Dividends that remain unclaimed for seven consecutive years are transferred to the Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority, along with the shares those dividends belonged to. The clocks are different lengths, they run against different institutions, and they are searched and claimed by entirely different processes. The one worth noticing first is the seven-year one, because a dormant bank account is something people at least recognise as a live problem, and an uncashed dividend is not.

After seven years it is not the dividend that goes — it is the shareholding verified
This is the part that is routinely misunderstood, and the misunderstanding is the reason it goes unaddressed for years. Where the dividend on a holding has not been paid or claimed for seven consecutive years or more, the SHARES themselves are transferred to the authority — not only the accumulated unpaid dividend. So the exposure is not the value of some uncashed warrants; it is the whole position, including everything it has appreciated to in the meantime. A holding bought decades ago by a parent who then stopped banking the dividend cheques is precisely the shape of asset this reaches, and it is also precisely the shape that nobody in the family is monitoring. The shares can be claimed back — but the claim is a process, and it starts from a much worse place than not letting it happen.

The central search portal is discovery only — the claim happens at the branch verified
The Reserve Bank operates a centralised portal for searching unclaimed deposits across participating banks. Searching produces a reference number identifying a matching record. It does not release money. Verification, document submission and payout happen directly with the bank that originally held the account. For a family abroad this is the constraint that determines the whole timetable, because it converts what looks like an online task into a physical, in-person, documentary one at a specific branch in a specific place — the same wall that stands in front of any Indian succession matter run from another country. Finding the asset is the easy half and it is the half that can be done from anywhere.

The portal does not cover every bank — so finding nothing is not the same as there being nothing verified
Participation in the central search facility is partial. Coverage reviewed describes dozens of participating banks accounting for the large majority of the fund's balances, which is a long way from all of them. So a search that returns nothing means the portal found nothing among the banks it covers — it is not a finding that no unclaimed deposit exists. If there is a specific bank the family believes held an account, ask that bank directly rather than treating a nil portal result as an answer. This is worth saying because a search that comes back empty feels conclusive in a way it is not, and it is the point at which most families stop looking.

A search needs a name plus one identifier — which is the thing to gather before anybody needs it verified
Searching requires the account holder's full name together with at least one identifier: sources describe a permanent account number, a voter identity number, a passport, a driving licence, or the registered address as accepted alternatives. For somebody trying to trace a deceased parent's holdings from abroad that ordering matters, because the identifiers are exactly what becomes hard to obtain after the fact and trivial to note down before. It is also the point at which a small documentary discrepancy stops the search: a name recorded differently on the account from the way it appears on the identifier is a common reason a genuine match is not returned.

A successor or legal heir may claim — but who that is remains a succession question, not a form question verified
Both regimes contemplate claims by somebody other than the original holder: sources describe applications to the investor fund being made by a successor or the legal heir or representative of a deceased person. What that does not do is settle who the successor is. Entitlement is decided by succession, and on Indian assets that turns on the personal law applicable to the deceased and on whether a will exists — a question this site treats separately and which no claim form resolves. So the sequence runs: establish who is entitled, then claim. Attempting it the other way round produces a rejected application and, where more than one relative has the same idea, a dispute that is materially worse than the delay would have been.

The application starts online and does not stay there — plan for a notary, originals and a courier verified
The claim to the investor fund begins with an online form, which is where the description of it usually stops. Sources setting out what actually has to be submitted describe a printed and signed copy of that form, the acknowledgement generated on submission, a notarised original indemnity bond, self-attested identity proof, proof of entitlement, a cancelled cheque, bank passbook and permanent account number copies. For a claimant outside India the notable items are the ones that must be original and notarised, since those cannot be produced by uploading anything. Sources also note that identity proof differs for a claimant abroad, with a passport or overseas-citizen document standing in place of the domestic identity number. Budget the time this takes in weeks and in physical post, not in an afternoon.

There is an industry that charges to do this for you — this page has no relationship with any of it verified
Recovering unclaimed shares and dividends supports an active market of paid intermediaries, and searching for how to do it will surface them before it surfaces anything else. Some may be useful, particularly where a holding is old, a registrar is unresponsive or a succession is complicated. That is a decision for the family. What this page will not do is name one, rank one, or link to one: it has no referral, affiliate or commercial relationship with any recovery service, registrar or intermediary, and it earns nothing whatever anybody decides. Two things worth knowing before engaging anyone: the claim routes described above are open to the entitled claimant directly and do not require an intermediary, and the entitlement question underneath — who the legal heir is — is a legal one that no recovery agent's process substitutes for.
