Auto Refi Alarm

You stopped being subprime eight months ago. Your car loan has not noticed — an auto loan's rate is fixed the day you sign, and it does not fall on its own as your score climbs. Pick the tier you were financed at and the tier you are likely in now, and see the spread Experian's own quarterly data says is sitting on the table. Nothing you enter below reaches any server.

Experian's five credit tiers, by score verified

Experian sorts auto borrowers into five tiers by credit score: super-prime (781-850), prime (661-780), nonprime — also called near-prime (601-660), subprime (501-600), and deep subprime (300-500). These bands are Experian's own definitions and are what the Automotive Finance Market APR tables below are organised around — a lender's own underwriting may draw the lines slightly differently, but this is the vocabulary the published rate spread uses.

New-car APR by tier, Q1 2026 (Experian State of the Automotive Finance Market) verified

For a new-vehicle loan, Experian's Q1 2026 data puts average APR at roughly 4.55% for super-prime, 9.67% for nonprime, and 13.44% for subprime, with the overall new-car average around 6.39%. Deep subprime is reported as either 16.01% or 15.85% depending on the secondary source — both figures trace to the same Q1 2026 report and the discrepancy was not resolved this session; treat deep-subprime new-car APR as 'roughly 16%' rather than trusting either decimal to the second digit. The prime-tier figure specifically was not independently located this session and is deliberately not stated as a number here — Experian's own site is the place to read it before quoting it to anyone.

Used-car APR by tier, Q1 2026 (Experian State of the Automotive Finance Market) verified

For a used-vehicle loan, Experian's Q1 2026 data puts the overall used-car average APR around 11.43%, with super-prime around 6.30%. Deep subprime is reported as either 21.77% or 21.60% depending on the secondary source, the same unresolved-discrepancy pattern as the new-car figure — read it as 'roughly 21-22%' rather than a precise decimal. As with new-car pricing, the prime-tier used-car figure was not independently located this session and is not stated as a number.

Your APR is fixed the day you sign — it does not fall on its own as your score rises verified

An auto loan's interest rate is set at origination and stays there for the life of the loan by default. A borrower who financed at a thin-file or subprime rate and later builds a real credit history does not see that improvement reflected in the existing loan automatically — the lender has no obligation to re-price it, and in the ordinary case never does. The only way to capture a tier upgrade already earned is to refinance: apply for a new loan, at the new rate, that pays off the old one.

What lenders generally look for before refinancing — no single universal threshold exists verified

Refinance eligibility varies by lender rather than following one fixed rule, but the recurring factors across credit-union and bank refinance programs are: the loan having built at least some on-time payment history (a brand-new loan is rarely eligible the same month it was signed), the borrower not owing meaningfully more than the car is currently worth (a positive or near-even loan-to-value position), and — for the best credit-union rates specifically — membership eligibility, which is sometimes as simple as a small one-time deposit. No single loan-age or LTV number is stated here as a rule, because none of the sources reviewed this session named one that held across lenders; shop the actual figure with two or three credit unions rather than assuming a threshold from this page.

This page estimates a spread from a published quarterly average, not your own quote — your actual rate depends on your specific score, the lender, the loan term and the vehicle. Treat the spread as "worth getting an actual quote for", not as the rate you will be offered.
