Landing Month One — UAE
The employment-visa sequence, Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The UAE's version of the ordering problem is compressed: one sixty-day window holds the whole status chain, your employer's PRO drives most of it, and until the Emirates ID exists almost nothing else will open.
The Emirates ID is mandatory for every resident and is in practice the gate to a full bank account, a SIM in your own name, a registered tenancy and utilities. Everything in the weeks after arrival sequences around its issuance date.
Mainland private-sector employers must pay wages through the Wage Protection System via approved institutions — your salary account is part of your employment's compliance, not just your convenience. Some banks pre-open a basic account on passport, visa and salary letter before the Emirates ID arrives; that half is bank-by-bank practice, so ask.
Employer-provided health insurance is mandatory in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and since 1 January 2025 a basic plan is required in the Northern Emirates too — it is now a precondition for issuing or renewing the residence permit. Abu Dhabi additionally obliges cover for a spouse and up to three children. Confirm your policy exists before you need it.
The tenancy contract must be registered (Ejari in Dubai, Tawtheeq in Abu Dhabi) before the utility provider will activate water and electricity in your name. Landlords know this; new arrivals discover it in the dark.
The UAE's automatic licence-exchange list does not include India, so an Indian licence holder enrols at an approved driving institute and passes theory and road tests. The list is periodically expanded — re-check the current one before paying for the full course.
